Split Lossless Audio and tag it.

The steps below are the steps that I follow to split my own audio that I find still in a single lossless file (usually .wav).

sudo apt-get install cuetools shntool flac
cuebreakpoints sample.cue | shnsplit -o flac sample.wav
cuetag sample.cue split-track*.flac

tUnE-yArDs Videos from Live @ KEXP sessions

I've been having a bit of a tUnE-yArDs obsession of late, and was happy to see some videos showing thier performance on KEXP.

I've always had a hard time explaining the way that Merrill Garbus loops her vocals and music to create a full feature piece.

Better then explaining is to watch her do it. Sarah and I saw her play at the Crocodile after she played on KEXP and the effect is intoxicating. I already loved the album, but seeing her do it live reinforced that feeling.

Coachella 2010 video

Great video giving a peak at what Coachella was like. For those who haven't been you really can't imagine the scale of the festival, it is impressive. What a great time it was.

Mean people suck, car edition!

This is the exact kind of situation that made me begin making archival copies of my music ASAP, sometimes before I even listened to it. Someone lifted my book of music cd's from my car the other day, and I just noticed last night.

Lucky for me (how ironic) I made backups of them all, so I can replace them at the cost of burning new ones, however they won't have the great art, and they won't bet the CD's i've spent thousands of dollars collecting.

At least they didn't break my window to get at it, they very professionally disabled my alarm and opened the door took my CD's then put everything back the way it was. I noticed one time when I got into my car that the car last week that the hood was popped, I thought that was strange so I opened it up and took a look, everything looked fine, but everything was not fine. A few days later I noticed that I couldn't find my book of CD's that I keep in my car to replenish my visor CD holder thingy. It had been jacked.

It could have been a lot worse, but it could have been a lot better too. Now I know that nothing in my car is safe, good to know, if I have anything that I don't want thieved either take it with me when I leave my car, or put it in the trunk with all the locks activated.

This thevery coupled with the addition of a smoking area directly outside our door really makes my apartment a LOT less appealing of a place to live.

Out with the Amarok in with the Listen

It happened one too many times, Amarok (Amarok) stopped playing my music. No good reason, just "too many errors". One last time it refused to play the one song I needed to hear right then. So it was time to switch. Pst... Listen (Listen), that is your queue.

I'm giving up form for function, the aesthetic for the operational. Its a tough choice, I've really loved Amarok, it was one of the first music players I scrobbled (My Last.fm profile) with. Now you can pick up scrobble integrated players at every turn.

First impressions, Listen just feels more like a Gnome app, which is not a surprise since Amarok has its roots so deep in the KDE world, and Listen is written in Python, which in my hobby coder world is my language of choice. We will have to see how things work out, I'm still hoping for something simple and elegant like foobar2000 (my all time favorite music player) or Songbird, and while I know I can run these via WINE, I'd rather support a native Linux option if I can.

Parallel Music Dimension

Somehow it has happened and I'm not really sure what we have done to deserve it. In any case there has been a barrage of great music events announced of late in and around the Seattle area for this upcoming summer.

First there was the 300 lb Gorilla: Sasquatch

With an evil plot to force concert goers to endure a grueling 3 day hell feast at the gorge or to selectively choose like some kind of sick game which bands to see and which to miss. After days of lamenting a decision had to be made. Saturday/Sunday it was. No Flight of the Conchords no The Flaming Lips no Built to Spill no Ghostland Observatory no Kinsky It were to be sad times.

Next came the party to end all parties: The Capitol Hill Block Party

And like a miracle the skies opened up and dumped upon us unworthy folk an amazing lineup of AWESOME bands including:

• The Hold Steady
• Kimya Dawson
• Les Savy Fav
• The Dodos
• Vampire Weekend

Just to name a few. WHOLY CRAP! is about the only thing to describe it. What could be better, two great multi-day music festivals around my home? I'll tell you what would be better.... a 3rd.

If two is good 20 is even better: Sub Pop 20th anniversary event

Again with a stellar lineup of great music to fill my weekend with bliss. We have:

• Flight of the Conchords
• Fleet Foxes
• The Helio Sequence
• Iron & Wine
• Kinsky
• Wolf Parade

An impressive lineup, made even moreso by the fact that it is all taking place near Seattle! If you are anything like me you are saying, "Surely there is nothing that can make this summer better musically, is there?"

The bigger older Gorilla: Bumbershoot

OH YEAH! You forgott about Bumbershoot? For shame! They recently announced the tennative lineup for the event... very nice!: Beck, Stone Temple Pilots, Lucinda Williams, Neko Case, Ingrid Michaelson, Del Tha Funky Homosapien, Jakob Dylan, !!!, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Saul Williams, Joe Bonamassa, M. Ward, The Walkmen, Asylum St. Spankers, Dan Deacon, MIDIval PunditZ, Blitzen Trapper, Bedouin Soundclash, Tim Finn, Dale Watson, John Vanderslice, Final Fantasy, The Fall of Troy, Orgone, Forro in the Dark, Ryan Bingham, Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby, Arthur & Yu, Darondo and Nino Moschella, Pacifika Baring some serious rain... all 4 of these events will for sure be super awesome! I usually hate the hot weather of summer, but this has got me excited!
